Welcome to Alpaca North, Home of the Waymar Stud! |
Few can resist the gentle nature, tranquil temperament
and calming humming sounds of the alpaca. This unique animal
also has the capacity to produce one of the finest fibres
known to man.
These animals were brought, from their natural habitat in
the high Andes of South America to New Zealand in the 1980’s
with the intention of developing a high quality alpaca fibre
industry. Currently there are approximately 4000 alpaca in
New Zealand. Not only do the alpacas provide the opportunity
for the development of a high quality fine fibre industry,
they also make wonderful pets. This is a wonderful, growing
life-style industry.
There are two kinds of alpacas, the suri alpaca that has
fibre that appears to be in the form of fine silky
dreadlocks, and the huacaya (pronounced wa-ki-a) alpaca that
can have a very colourful fibre, that is extremely fine and
gives the alpaca a woolly and round appearance.
